Big Wheel Press, William Muller
Big Wheel Press is a letterpress studio located in Easthampton, Massachusetts. They print on a variety of presses including a Vandercook SP-20 and SP-25, Golding Pearl #14, and a Chandler & Price Pilot.
The idea for Big Wheel Press happened during a visit by Bill Muller to Ali Osborn’s studio. Bill watched in amazement when Ali sat and hand burnished print paper on a manually inked block with his bare hands…one print at a time.
Bill immediately went on a search for a hand letterpress. The press officially opened in the summer of 2008 when Bill Muller and Ali Osborn found unused letterpress equipment in a Berkshire County basement.
The first press was a Pearl #14 which has a huge cast iron flywheel, which is half the reason for the name Big Wheel Press. The other reason for our name is love of Big Wheel tricycles!
Bill Muller, Printer/Designer Bill has been involved with letterpress since high school in California where he did page layout with hot type for the school newspaper…way before computer composition. While working for the Valley Advocate in the late 70′s he operated stat cameras and photo typesetting equipment and did old fashioned paste up.
